Android Games Review: Spider Boy (Fun Game Lands)

Short and addictive mini game where you web-sling across the skyscrapers of New York City.

Gameplay: You control spider boy and your aim is to travel as far as possible.  As soon as you start, spider boy is falling from mid air.  You click once on a building to throw out a web line.  As you swing across, your next click releases the line.  If you’ve timed your release correctly, then the momentum from your swing will propel you through the air.  You continue to throw out lines and swing your way across the city.  Don’t touch the floor though, otherwise your body will be smashed to pieces.

There’s a variety of different game modes: time based, free swinging (easy, medium and hard) and distance based.  The default setup is to try and swing as far as you can in 60 seconds.  Once you’ve done your course you can upload your score onto the online leaderboard.

Marvel points: This is an addictive game which injects a strong amount of competitiveness with the online highscores.

Verdict: 1/5 Spider-boy is a simple Physics game which is addictive, and provides short relief for your travels.  It takes a bit of getting used to the gameplay initially, but once you get going it’s quite fun.  Unfortunately, the graphics and sound need more polishing… in fact the sound effects are tragically bad.  I think the weblines are a bit of a disappointment – I’m sure Spider man doesn’t websling like this.  For such a simple game, the memory footprint seems very large – it’s 1.5 MB for some reason.

The thing I dislike the most about this game, is the fact that it’s a blatent rip off of Spider Man which tarnishes the Marvel brand name.   The concept isn’t bad, but the execution doesn’t do justice to this amazing comic.  Why not pimp up the graphics, and improve the sound.  If you love comics then don’t touch this game, otherwise give this a short try… it is free afterall.
